The biggest news out of Royals camp in the last week was the signing of free agent reliever Juan Cruz as a key setup man for Joakim "The Mexicutioner" Soria. My, and others', first question is why not Cruz first instead of throwing big bucks at Kyle Farnsworth? But the Royals ended up with both of them, and Cruz seems to be a key acquisition for GM Dayton Moore. It was announced Wednesday Cruz would be skipping the first round of WBC play for the Dominican Republic. To make room on the 40-man roster, Esteban German was DFA'd and I assume will get released like P Neal Musser did.

Also signed over the weekend was former Braves pitcher (as well as a few other teams, most recently Texas) Bruce Chen to a minor league deal. I figure if he can swing it coming off arm surgery he'll fill out the Omaha rotation all season. In injury news, oft-injured reliever John Bale had thyroid problems and ended up having the gland removed. He's expected back in camp soon.

After a Tuesday tie with the Tribe, the Royals' spring record is 3-2-2, which looks more like a hockey record, but that's spring training. The good news has been some potent offense for KC, but the bad has been some poor pitching and defense in early March. Gil Meche was roughed up in his last appearance, Horacio Ramirez has taken some beatings and suffered from poor defensive play behind him, and Zack Greinke got lit up by the Indians Tuesday.
